TROY, Ala. – Troy senior bandit Hunter Reese is one of 70 nominees nationally for the Burlsworth Trophy which is presented annually to the most outstanding player who began his career as a walk-on.
Â
Now in its ninth year, the Burlsworth Trophy is named in honor of Brandon Burlsworth, former University of Arkansas walk-on and All-American offensive lineman. Burlsworth's life is also the subject of a major motion picture, Greater, which was released in 2016.
Â
Reese earned First Team All-Sun Belt honors last season after he finished fifth in the league with 14 tackles for loss and seventh with 6.5 sacks despite only starting six games. A native of Wetumpka, Ala., Reese was placed on scholarship by head coach Neal Brown at the end of fall camp his junior season.
Â
Despite a well-earned reputation for disruption in the backfield and drawing extra attention of offensive lines, Reese's currently ranks third in the Sun Belt with 4.5 sacks on the season and fourth with nine tackles for loss. He carries a 16-game streak with a tackle for loss into Troy's Homecoming contest with Louisiana on Saturday in The Vet.
Â
The Brandon Burlsworth Foundation, in conjunction with Springdale Rotary Club, will host an awards ceremony on Dec. 3, 2018, in Springdale, Ark., to honor the three finalists and to announce the 2018 winner.
