Troy Drops Two Matches at Morehead State Invitational

MOREHEAD, Kentucky- After a three-match win streak, Troy volleyball (3-7) dropped its first game of the Morehead State Comfort Inn-Vitational 3-1 against Middle Tennessee State (1-8). In their second match of the day, host team Morehead State (6-3) defeated the Trojans 3-0 at the Wetherby Gym on Friday.
Troy 1, Middle Tennessee 3
Troy struggled to get the offense going as the Blue Raiders held Troy to a .141 attack percentage. Sophomore Savannah Moore and senior Lauren Long continued to come out strong as Moore led the team with 16 kills and a .538 hitting percentage followed by Long with 15 kills and a .364 percentage.
The Trojans came out with energy as a five-point run gave them an early 6-1 lead in the first set, but Troy couldn't hold on to the lead as Middle Tennessee bounced back to take the first two sets.
Troy fought back in the third set going on a four-point run to close out the game 25-21 to force a fourth set. Both teams stayed evenly matched until the Blue Raiders were able to pull away at the end to earn the 25-19 victory over the Trojans to get their first win of the season.
Troy 0, Morehead State 3
The Trojans recorded their lowest number of kills (34) this season against Morehead State. The Eagles held Troy to a .077 attack percentage and posted a percentage of .236 to take the match in straight sets.
Troy struggled to find answers to freshman Lauren Rokey who is the reigning OVC Newcomer of the Week. Rokey recorded 11 kills, eight kills and two blocks to lead the Eagles to their second win of the day.
Freshman Cheyenne Hayes stepped up once again for the Trojans as she tallied a team-high eight kills and also added eight digs. Her high-risk high-reward serve that leads the Sun Belt in service aces got the best of her as she only recorded one ace with five errors on the night.
UP NEXT
The Trojans will close out the Morehead State Comfort Inn-Vitational Saturday against South Carolina State. Due to the weather, the match time has been moved up to 8 a.m. CT. Troy will continue tournament play as it travels to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the Crimson and White Tournament Sept. 15-16.
