ALABAMA STATE – Sept. 9
Troy's home schedule will open with the 16th all-time meeting with in-state foe Alabama State – the Trojans lead the series 13-2 (6-0 at home). Coming off a 5-6 season under third-year head coach Brian Jenkins, the Hornets will face back-to-back in-state rivals after kicking off the season against Tuskegee.

The Trojans will welcome Akron to the Vet for yet another first all-time meeting with an opponent in the 2017 season. The Zips, led by former Samford, Auburn and North Alabama head coach Terry Bowden, will look to bounce back from a disappointing 3-9 season in 2016.

City: Akron, Ohio
Distance to the Vet: 838 miles
Nickname: Zips
Namesake: A shortening of "Zippers", a pair of rubber overshoes and a brand name of the BF Goodrich Company of Akron. It was originally adopted by the school in 1925 after a contest to give the school a nickname – "Kangaroos" was one of the choices at the time. In 1950, the current nickname was adopted because of the rising popularity of zippers in use on pants. Two years later, a committee suggested the kangaroo as a mascot.
