TROY, Alabama – Troy student-athletes, administrators and coaches joined together Tuesday night at Claudia Crosby Theater to recognize the best Troy Athletics has to offer both on the field and in the classroom at the third annual Trojan Tribute.
Awards were handed out in 17 different categories ranging from strength & conditioning honors, to top grade-point-averages and #OneTROY Team of the Year. The awards, which were based on the 2016 calendar year (Spring 2016, Fall 2016, Winter 2016-17), were voted on by members of Troy's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and the Trojan Tribute Senior Voting Committee.
"This is always a special night as we get an opportunity to celebrate the successes of our teams and student-athletes, which are many," Troy Director of Athletics Jeremy McClain said. "It is an outstanding event that really highlights what it means to be a Troy Trojan."
The premier individual award of the evening, the Trojan Way Leadership Award, was presented to senior softball standout Becca Hartley. Hartley is the Troy University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee President and is currently tied for 12th nationally with 16 home runs this season.
Top academic honors went to track & field's Katrina Bokenfohr, who will graduate with a perfect 4.0 GPA next week with a degree in exercise science and baseball's Trey Johns, who will graduate with a 3.9 GPA next week with a degree in accounting.
The football team took home the #OneTROY Team Award after posting the school's first-ever 10-win season at the FBS level and earning an Associated Press Top 25 ranking after a thrilling victory over Appalachian State.
Recently selected by the New England Patriots in the third round of the NFL Draft, Antonio Garcia was named the Male Athlete of the Year after he did not allow a sack in more than 900 snaps last season. After leading Troy to back-to-back Sun Belt Conference Tournament titles and trips to the NCAA Tournament, Caitlyn Ramirez was named the Female Athlete of the Year.
