Softball Hosts Trojan Classic for 2017 Home Opener

TROY, Alabama – The Troy softball team will host the Trojan Classic Feb. 17-19, for the 2017 home opener at the Troy Softball Complex. The tournament will feature games against Jacksonville and Longwood on Friday, Samford and Longwood on Saturday, and a single game against Jacksonville on Sunday to close out the tournament. The games on Friday and Saturday are scheduled for 3 and 5 p.m. Sunday's game is set to begin at 12:30 p.m. CT.

Head coach Beth Mullins enters her third year after leading the Trojans to a 31-25 record last year and a sixth place finish in the conference.

Troy is coming off of a 3-2 weekend as they competed in the FAU "Kick-Off" Classic in Boca Raton, Fla. The Trojans earned big wins against Bethune-Cookman and NC-State, but fell to Michigan State and North Florida.

Leading the team is senior short stop Becca Hartley, who posted two home runs last weekend. Hartley now has 25 career home runs, which is third all-time in the Troy record books. Jordan Gray got in on the home run action last weekend as she blasted her first career homer, powering the Trojans past the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats 9-6.

In the circle for the Trojans, senior left-handed pitcher Rachel Rigney Bown is now 2-1 on the season as she threw for 19.2 innings at the FAU "Kick-Off" Classic, including seven innings in Troy's 5-3 win over NC State.

Troy will feature six newcomers this season. Sophomore transfers Taylor Corbett and Maddie Porter, as well as freshmen Katie Webb, who started all five games at third base at the FAU "Kick-Off" Classic and posted a .375 batting average with six hits on the weekend, Grace Mirly, Brooke Echols and Logan Calhoun.

The Trojans are 7-0 all-time against Jacksonville, and 39-11 all-time against Samford. Friday's game will be the first meeting between Troy and Longwood.
