TROY, Ala. – Troy shot 50 percent from the field but couldn't overcome the size of UAB on Tuesday night as the Trojans fell 90-78 in the final home non-conference game.
With Jordon Varnado out for the third-straight game with a foot injury, UAB controlled the boards by doubling Troy up 40-20 in the rebound category. Chris Cokley was the most dominant Blazer with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Despite the size advantage, Troy kept pace throughout from another impressive performance from Wesley Person. The senior had 27 points fueled by a perfect 12-12 from the free-throw line to lead all scorers.
Person's shooting sparked a 19-4 run from the end of the first half through the beginning of the second half. He was aided by Alex Hicks as the forward pumped in 17 second half points to finish with a double-double after grabbing 10 rebounds.
The Trojans lead held before two free throws from Lewis Sullivan put UAB up 64-63 with 9:33 left to play. Troy would not lead again on the night as Sullivan scored 13 from that point on to end Troy's three-game winning streak.
QUOTABLE
"The obvious stat is the rebounding statistic," head coach Phil Cunningham said. "That's where the game was lost. If you look at the stat sheet, we did a lot of things well: we shot 50 percent against a good team, 38.5 percent from three and 87 percent from the free-throw line.
"Give UAB credit; they seized the day and went after it. I'm proud of how our guys got down and then got right back in it. We had them shook there for a little bit, but they were good down the stretch."
UP NEXT
Troy will head back out on the road with a matchup at Southern Miss on Sunday at 2 p.m.
NOTEWORTHY
• Wesley Person has now scored 22 or more for four-straight games
• Alex Hicks had the second-most points in his career with 17 on 6-11 shooting.
• UAB had 19 offensive rebounds to Troy's four.
