Troy Volleyball Splits in Day One of Trojan Invitational

TROY, Alabama – The Troy volleyball team split in the opening day of the Trojan Invitational with a 3-0 win over Southern for the first game and a 1-3 loss to Valparaiso in the nightcap on Friday in Trojan Arena.

Troy (3-3) was led by Jordyn Saulsberry, who had 22 kills on the day. Six of them came in the first game against Southern (1-5) and 16 of them (a new career-high) came in the loss to Valparaiso (3-2).

GAME ONE (TROY VS SOUTHERN)
TURNING POINT
Troy went on an 8-0 scoring run in the first set to take a 16-8 lead en route to a 25-15 victory. With the game tied at eight, the Trojans outscored the Jaguars 17-7, led in large part by Sara Landis, Logan Page and Leah Causey, who had three kills each.

QUOTABLE
"We came out real well and followed the gameplan," Sonny Kirkpatrick said. "I thought we had great energy and the crowd was fantastic. It was the best we have played all year."

STAT OF THE GAME
For the match, the Trojans had a season-high .349 attack percentage. Lauren Long had six kills with a .400 attack percentage and Jordyn Saulsberry had a .600 attack percentage with six kills.

SPREADING THE WEALTH
The Trojans had 13 out of 15 players play in the match as five players engaged in all three sets, three played in two sets and four played in one.

SECOND MATCH OF THE DAY (TROY VS VALPARAISO)
The Trojans continued the day against Valparaiso, but fell to the Crusaders in four sets. The Trojans won the first set 25-15, but fell in the second 25-21, 25-19 in the third and dropped the final set 25-17.

"Valpo settled in and did what they wanted to do," Kirkpatrick said, "We were less aggressive and it gave them opportunities to score. I like the way we fought back at the end. Unfortunately, it was too little to late."

Valparaiso continued its success after a second set victory, by going on a 6-0 run to begin the third and did not look back in winning three straight sets.

Jordyn Saulsberry has continued her success by reaching a new career-high kills with 16. Her previous career-high (12) was set earlier this week in the win over Southeastern Louisiana.
