Troy Cheer Earns Two Titles at UCA Camp

TROY, Alabama - The Troy University cheerleading team attended the UCA College Cheerleading Camp at the University of Alabama this past weekend. During the four-day camp the cheerleaders learned new routines, cheers, stunts, and game day activities that can be used for collegiate athletic events. A competition was held at the end of the camp for sideline chant, fight song, cheer and overall game day.
"I am so proud of this team," head coach Tiffany Chandler said. "This year we have about 50 percent newcomers and 50 percent returners. The accomplishments from camp this past weekend were above our expectations."
The Trojans All Girl squad competed against the University of Alabama, Mississippi State, UCF, Florida State and Florida and earned two first place finishes for overall game day and sideline chant. The team placed second in cheer and earned a fourth place finish in the fight song category.
The coed team won two third-place finishes for the overall game day and cheer categories and a fifth place finish in the fight song category.
Mascots T-Roy and TJ (T-Roy Jr.) attended the camp for the first time and came home with the Most Improved Mascot Award.
"When we attend camp we have the opportunity to perform with the best in the nation," Chandler said. "Camp allows us to prepare for the game day experience for football and basketball games for our institution. It helps us understand what we need to do as spirit leaders to incorporate the crowd and make the experience for our fans the best possible."
The squad returns to Troy to prepare to host the Back To School Camp on Aug. 27. The event is open to ages 3-18. The application and waiver can be found at TroyTrojans.com.
