BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – Troy junior Fátima Fernández Cano fired a 5-over 77 in Friday's second round of the NCAA East Regional at the Shoal Creek Country Club. Cano climbed 19 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 64th place heading into Saturday's final round.
Cano opened on the back nine and made the turn at 3-over after a birdie, a pair of bogeys and a double-bogey. After a double-bogey on No. 1 pushed her card to 5-over, Cano responded with a birdie on the par-5 third hole and ended with a bogey on the par-4 seventh to settle her card at 5-over for the round.
She entered the NCAA East Regional ranked fifth nationally with a 4.02 average on par-4 holes, while ranking 18th with a 72.15 stroke average and +0.35 score versus par. A native of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, Cano is currently slotted 24th in the latest World Amateur Golf rankings, while checking in 52nd in the Golfweek national collegiate rankings.
Cano wraps up play Saturday beginning at 8:15 a.m. on the back nine. The top six teams and top three individuals not on a qualifying team will advance to the NCAA Championship.
