3/5/2016 10:26:00 PM | Basketball (M)
ARLINGTON, Texas – Playing in his final game at Troy, senior John Walton III posted his sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and 15 rebounds, but homestanding UT Arlington came away with the 90-55 victory Saturday evening at the College Park Center in the season finale for the Trojans.
Walton, who pulled down 11 offensive rebounds in the game, moved into fourth place all-time in Troy's Division I history with 422 career rebounds. The senior from Memphis, Tenn., also moved into third place on the Troy Division I single-season rebounding list as he finished the year with 257 rebounds (just one shy of second place).
Wesley Person hit a trio of 3-pointers in the game to finish the season with 96, which ranks as the second most in a single-season in Troy's Division I history and the third most in a season all-time in Troy history. It also extended his streak of hitting a 3-pointer to all 60 games of his career, which is the longest active streak in the country.
Jordon Varnado scored 12 points for the Trojans and will finish the season just four points shy of Troy's freshman scoring record, which was set by Person last year. Jeremy Hollimon and Person both scored nine points, while B.J. Miller added seven.
Troy outrebounded UTA 20-18 on the offensive glass despite the Mavs entering the game leading the Sun Belt in offensive rebounding.
Troy (9-22, 4-16 Sun Belt) led 19-16 coming out of the eight-minute media timeout in the first half, but UT Arlington went on a 28-7 run from that point on to take a 46-26 lead into the half. After the Trojans held the Mavs to just 25 percent shooting over the opening eight minutes of the game, UTA hit 11 of its final 12 field goal attempts of the half.
The Trojans opened the game hitting on six of their first 12 shots, however they drastically cooled off with makes on just four of their last 27 attempts from the floor in the half.
UT Arlington (22-9, 13-7) opened the second half on a 13-2 run before building a lead as large as 40 points in the game. The Mavs hit 11 3-pointers in the game and outrebounded the Trojans 57-43 in the game; UTA entered the game ranked second in the country in rebounding.
Kennedy Eubanks led the Mavs with 15 points, while Jalen Jones and Jorge Bilbao added double-doubles. Jones finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds and Bilbao added 10 points and 10 rebounds.
