KENNESAW, Georgia – Fátima Fernández Cano won for the fourth time in seven tournaments this season to lead the Troy women's golf team at the Henssler Financial Intercollegiate, which concluded Tuesday at the Pinetree Country Club. The Trojans finished in a tie for sixth place as a team and picked up victories over a pair of teams slotted ahead of them in the national rankings.
Cano rallied from five shots back entering the final round to tie for co-medalist honors with Texas Tech's Lauren Mason and Augusta's Josefine Nyqvist. The Troy junior knocked off the nation's No. 4 player, Texas Tech's Gabby Barker, by four shots.
Three of Cano's individual victories have come in Troy's four tournaments this spring. In the three tournaments she has not won this season, Cano has finished second, 15th and 19th. She entered the week ranked 84th overall in the country, while checking in ninth in scoring vs. par.
Troy fired the third-best round of the day with a 13-over 301 as a team on a day where the course played to an average of 78.0 per round (312 per team).
The Trojans, who entered the tournament ranked 99th nationally, moved up a spot on the leaderboard into a tie for sixth place with No. 87 South Florida. Troy finished 13 shots up on No. 74 Old Dominion and 21 shots ahead of No. 89 East Tennessee State. No. 26 Texas Tech won the team title by 10 shots over No. 34 Augusta, while No. 63 Illinois, No. 53 Middle Tennessee and No. 60 Chattanooga rounded out the top five.
Cano opened her round on No. 8 due to the shotgun start in place on Tuesday. She immediately birdied No. 9 to move to 1-under. After three bogeys and a pair of birdies, Cano entered her final six holes at even par. She birdied back-to-back holes to move to 2-under with four holes to play, but took a triple-bogey on the par-4 No. 6 to finish the day 1-over.
Bianca Lohbauer and Gabi Oubre' shot up the leaderboard for the Trojans moving up 15 and 14 spots, respectively. Oubre' finished in a tie for 23rd place after shooting a 2-over 74 in the final round; she opened her day with four bogeys over the first five holes, but responded with four birdies over a seven-hole stretch. Lohbauer's round featured a trio of birdies and just three holes over par as she moved into a tie for 26th place.
Lindsey Harrison finished in a tie for 52nd place after shooting a 9-over 81 on Tuesday. She was only 2-over after 11 holes, but ran into trouble over the final eight holes. Becca Horner rounded out the team lineup for the Trojans in a tie for 54th place after carding an 82 in the final round, while Antonia Poate tied for 68th place competing as an individual.
Troy will be right back in action Friday at the Rebel Intercollegiate hosted by Ole Miss.
