TROY, Alabama – Playing for the final time in Trojan Arena, John Walton III scored a game-high 18 points, but it was not enough as Troy fell to ULM, 66-51, Saturday afternoon in Sun Belt Conference action.
Jordon Varnado continued his late-season resurgence for the Trojans as he dropped in 16 points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, while Wesley Person added 10 points and three rebounds. Varnado is averaging 14.3 points and 6.7 rebounds over the last three games.
It marks the fourth time this season and the sixth time in Walton's career that he has led the Trojans in scoring, while Person hit double digits for the 50th time in 58 career games.
Person's streak of consecutive games with a 3-pointer reached 58 games as he hit a pair in the game, but it wasn't without some drama. ULM held Person without a 3-point attempt in the first half and his first trey of the game didn't come until the 8:35 mark in the second half.
ULM (17-12, 13-5 Sun Belt) ended the first half on a 10-2 run over the final five minutes to take a 32-24 lead into the break. Leading 39-31 with 16:48 to play in the game, the Warhawks went on a 13-1 run to build a 20-point advantage with 10:02 to go in the game.
The Trojans (9-20, 4-14) responded with a 10-2 run of their own over the next three-plus minutes to pull within 54-42. However, ULM reeled off six straight points over the next two minutes to build its lead back out to 18.
Majok Deng led the Warhawks with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Nick Coppola added 14 points and DeMondre Harvey chipped in 11 points and seven boards.
Troy attacked the offensive glass with 13 offensive rebounds which led to 15 second-chance points. The Trojans also took care of the basketball for the second straight game as they had just nine turnovers in the contest.
The Trojans wrap up the season next week with a trip to Texas. Troy opens the road trip at Texas State on Thursday before closing the season at UT Arlington on Saturday.
