Trojans Open Troy Classic on Friday Against Ole Miss

TROY, Alabama – The Troy softball team is back in action this weekend as it hosts the Troy Classic at the Troy Softball Complex. The Trojans begin play on Friday with a doubleheader against Ole Miss at 2:30 p.m. and Eastern Illinois at 5 p.m.

Troy plays another doubleheader on Saturday facing Tennessee Tech at 2:30 and McNeese State at 5 p.m. before wrapping up the tournament against Tennessee Tech at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Troy (4-1) enters the Troy Classic coming off a big weekend at the Trojan Invite last weekend. The Trojans won four of their five games during the season-opening tournament with the only loss coming in extra innings. Junior Becca Hartley led the Trojans offensively with a .444 batting average, 11 runs scored, 11 RBIs and four home runs.

Seniors Amanda Winters and Hannah Day also had big weekends. Winters hit .385 with six runs, seven RBIs, two doubles and two home runs, while Day batted .333 with six runs, eight RBIs, and three home runs. Senior Ashley Rainey (3-1) led Troy in the circle with three wins and six strikeouts in 13.2 innings of work.

After setting the school single-season home run record a season ago, the Trojans hit 11 bombs over their five games in the Trojan Invite. Troy averaged 9.2 runs per game and the Trojans were a perfect 11-for-11 on stolen base attempts.

Ole Miss (4-1) travels to Troy looking to improve their record on the young season. The Rebels traveled to Honolulu, Hawaii to begin their season and came away with four victories and just one loss. Troy won the last meeting between the two schools, 5-1, in 2012 and the overall series is tied 1-1.

Eastern Illinois comes in with a 3-2 record after dropping two games to Iowa State in the Iowa State Cyclone Invitational. The Panthers have victories over North Dakota and IUPUI on the young season. Troy leads the series with Eastern Illinois 2-1.

McNeese State enter the weekend 2-2 on the season with a win over ULM in its season opener and a victory over Baylor in a three-game series. The two schools have met twice previously and split the two meetings.

Tennessee Tech comes in with a 3-2 record after dropping games to Houston and Mississippi State in the Bulldog Kickoff last weekend in Starkville, Miss. Troy has had the upper hand in the series with the Eagles winning five of the previous seven meetings.
