Volleyball Snaps Streak with 3-1 Win Over South Alabama

TROY, Alabama – The Troy volleyball team got back to the winning ways with a 3-1 (22-25,25-19,27-25,25-20) win over South Alabama on Tuesday night in Trojan Arena.

In a match that had 33 total ties and 12 total lead changes, 12 of the ties came in the first set, which Troy (7-20, 1-9 Sun Belt) lost, 25-22. South Alabama (13-10, 4-6 Sun Belt) had a -.057 hitting percentage in the second set and the Trojans went on a late 9-3 run to win the set and tie the match at one set win each.

Both teams regained the lead six times in the third set, but the Trojans came out on top in a 27-25. Troy used a 5-0 run after falling behind 11-7, to regain the lead by a point in the fourth set. Avalon Nero gave the Trojans a late spark with a service ace that eventually led to a 21-16 lead and ultimately Troy went on to clinch the match with a 25-20 fourth set victory.

"It's been a long time since we've had the joy of winning a match," Sonny Kirkpatrick said. "I thought they really played well tonight. I thought they started seeing the fruits of their labor. Tonight was a total team win, they played hard every ball."

Troy fell behind 24-23 in the third set, but ended on a 4-1 run and won the third set 27-25. That momentum carried into the fourth set as the Trojans sealed the match with a 25-20 comeback victory.

Sydney Pineda, Kiara Barrett, Bethany Cullity, Belle Waldrop and Logan Page together accounted for 24 of 56 kills, 42 of 71 digs and 10 of 15 total blocks in the match.

• Troy snapped a 16-match losing streak with the win over the Jaguars. It's the Trojans first conference win of the season.

• Belle Waldrop and Sara Landis led the Trojans with 11 kills each.

• Waldrop set a new career-high with eight kills and recorded a .300 hitting percentage, the best in her career with more than seven kills.

Troy will return to Trojan Arena for a Friday night matchup with Appalachian State and will conclude their home season against Coastal Carolina on Saturday night. Both matches are slated for a 6 p.m., first serve.
