TROY, Alabama – Troy softball head coach Beth Mullins announced Tuesday the hiring of former University of Nebraska standout pitcher Alex Hupp as the Trojans' pitching coach.
Â
Hupp joins the Troy staff following one season as the top assistant at East Tennessee State and a two-year stint at South Dakota State. A native of Olathe, Kan., Hupp served as the interim head coach at South Dakota State for the 2014 season after one year as an assistant for the Jackrabbits.
Â
"I am extremely excited to have Coach Hupp joining our staff here at Troy," Mullins said. "I think she is a great fit for both our coaching staff and for our players. She brings a lot of positive energy, a passion for coaching and recruiting, along with a great softball mind to our program."
Â
Prior to her tenure at South Dakota State, Hupp had two successful seasons as an assistant coach at Emporia State. She helped lead the Hornets to a combined 84-27 record over her two seasons with back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division II Regionals, including an appearance in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional final in 2012.
Â
"I am very excited to be a Trojan," Hupp said "I would like to thank Athletic Director Jeremy McClain, Sr. Associate Athletic Director Sandy Atkins and head coach Beth Mullins for giving me this opportunity. I am looking forward to joining an athletic department with such a strong tradition as Troy and becoming apart of a high-energy driven team. I am blessed to be joining such a talented staff at Troy and can't wait to experience the great things this team has to offer."
Â
Hupp enjoyed a standout career at Nebraska, where she saw time in the circle and in the field, as she amassed 58 total pitching appearances and 239 career at-bats. In her first career start in the circle, Hupp threw a shutout versus Portland State to become the first Husker to throw a shutout in her first start since All-American Peaches James in 2001.
Â
As a sophomore, Hupp emerged as Nebraska's No. 2 starter, tossing 133 innings, including a no-hitter versus Northern Colorado in 2008. In that game, she struck out 12 batters to go along with a solid day at the plate with a pair of hits and two RBIs.
Â
Hupp was twice named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team and was a four-time Commissioners Honor Roll honoree.
Â
Hupp helped lead Olathe East High School to three consecutive Class 6A state championships from 2004-06, earning First Team High School All-America Honors in 2006 along with being named the 2005-06 Gatorade Softball Player of the Year for the state of Kansas. Hupp finished her high school career with a 69-1 record in the circle.
