Troy Softball Season Recap

TROY, Alabama - The Troy softball team matched its highest win total this season, than it did in the last five seasons under first year head coach Beth Mullins and broke the single season home run record last set in 2007.

Mullins was named Sun Belt Conference Co-Coach of the Year in her first year as a head coach. She led the Trojans to a 32-23 overall record and a 14-10 record in the Sun Belt Conference. Mullins also coached the Trojans to three wins against top-25 programs and won back-to-back games against top-10 opponents for the first time in school history. Troy defeated No. 10 Florida State and No. 7 UL Lafayette on the road to accomplish the feat.

The Trojans broke a school record for most home runs hit in a season as Troy belted 51 home runs. The previous record was set in 2001 with 46 home runs hit. Becca Hartley, who was named Second Team All-Sun Belt, led the team with 10 home runs. Michelle Phelps and Amanda Winters, both hit nine each, while Hannah Day and Ashley Rainey hit six on the season.

Jaycee Affeldt led the way for Troy in the circle as she finished with a 2.65 ERA and a 17-11 record. She struck out 150 batters in 182.1 innings of work, which was the second most innings pitched in the Sun Belt. Affeldt was named Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Year, First Team All-Sun Belt, NFCA South Third Team All-Region and NFCA Academic All-District.

Hannah Day led the way offensively for the Trojans as she batted a team-high .329 and knocked in 43 runs, which also led the team. She hit three triples, six home runs and led the team in doubles with 13 and hits with 57.

Kate Benton swiped 26 bases on 29 attempts this season, which was the most on the team and had a .314 batting average, which was second best on the team. Benton also had a .378 on-base percentage and scored 43 times this season, which was the most runs scored by a single player on the team.

Troy third baseman, Khadija Neely, and first baseman, Michelle Phelps, were stellar for Troy on defense. Neely had 114 assists, which was the second most assists in a single season since 2009 and had 45 putouts at the hot corner. Phelps had 371 putouts, which was fourth most in a single season since 2009 and had 18 assists with a .992 fielding percentage. The two players combined for only seven errors all season.

The Trojans won 17 home games this season, which is the most wins at home since 2005, where the Trojans won 21 games at home. Troy posted a 9-2 home record against Sun Belt Conference opponents.
