TROY, Alabama – The Troy University softball team and head coach Beth Mullins announced its 2016 schedule on Tuesday, which features 13 games against 2015 NCAA Tournament teams, including two that played in the Women's College World Series.
"I am very excited about our schedule this year," Mullins said. "The Sun Belt Conference schedule is always strong, and in addition we have an extremely competitive out of conference schedule that will really challenge this team this year. We are hosting three tournaments and it will be great playing in front of our home crowd so much."
The Trojans start the season by hosting three tournaments in the month of February at the Troy Softball Complex. Eastern Michigan, Marshall, Evansville and Alabama State will participate in the first tournament of the season, the Troy Firehouse Invite on February 12-14.
Ole Miss, Eastern Illinois, Tennessee Tech and McNeese State will make the trip to Troy to take part in the second Firehouse Invite the next weekend on February 19-21.
Troy will host its last home tournament, the Trojan Classic, on February 26-28 when Dayton, Austin Peay, Missouri State and Mercer all visit Troy.
The Trojans will end their tournament run in Nashville, Tenn., at the Lipscomb Tournament where Youngstown State, Lipscomb, Furman and Indiana State are scheduled to participate.
Troy will host 12 Sun Belt games, and four series, as Georgia State, No. 10 UL Lafayette, Texas State and Georgia Southern all visit the Troy Softball Complex. The defending Sun Belt Champion Ragin' Cajuns will come to town on March 25-26 for a three-game series.
Conference road series include Appalachian State, ULM, UT Arlington and South Alabama. The Sun Belt Conference Tournament will begin on May 11-14 in Mobile, Ala.
Non-conference games for Troy include trips to No. 6 Alabama, UAB, South Carolina, No. 3 Auburn and Georgia Tech. Auburn and Alabama both played in the Women's College World Series last season.
There will be three mid-week non-conference home games for Troy as Florida A&M, Kennesaw State and Samford come to Troy.
The Trojans return several players, including eight seniors in Kate Benton, Leah Brundidge, Hannah Day, Heather Johnston, Khadija Neely, Ashley Rainey, Rachel Rigney and Amanda Winters.
Sun Belt Coach of the Year, Beth Mullins, led the Trojans to a 32-23 overall record and a 14-10 record in the Sun Belt in 2015 and coached the Trojans to three wins against top-25 programs.
