Troy Softball Begins Spring Practice

TROY, Alabama - The Troy softball team began practice this week at the Troy Softball Complex in preparation for the 2015 season under first-year head coach Beth Mullins.
"I have been itching to get back on the field because I feel like we made a lot of progress in the fall," Mullins said. "It is a process and I think they did a good job at that. They were better at the end of the fall than when they started and as a coach that is all I can ask for."
The Trojans return all their pitchers from last year's squad, including senior Jaycee Affeldt who struck out a career high 164 batters last season and finished fifth in the Sun Belt in fewest earned runs allowed. Junior Ashley Rainey also returns after posting a 2.27 ERA last season, which was the best on the team.
"We have good pitching and an incredibly talented group of players whose offensive numbers last year did not indicate what they were actually capable of," Mullins said. "When people hear 'Troy Softball' I want them to think of energy, fast paced and excellence."
Helping the Trojans out offensively this year will be junior Amanda Winters and senior Michelle Phelps. Winters posted a .250 batting average, to go along with five home runs and 18 RBIs. Phelps lead the team last year with six home runs and 39 RBIs.
Troy opens its season on Feb. 5 at Auburn before hosting the Troy Classic that weekend. The Trojans will play four games during the opening weekend, beginning with Florida A&M at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 6.
