Box Score
TROY, Ala. – Quick and hard-nosed base running by Clay Holcomb helped lead Troy to a 4-3 victory over ULM at Riddle-Pace Field on Saturday.
Â
With bases loaded and two outs in a tied game in the ninth inning, Holcomb raced towards second on a soft ground ball to ULM second baseman Anthony Herrera. The flip to shortstop Kodie Tidwell botched allowing Matthew Howard to score the game-winning run.
Â
It wasn't the only run Holcomb helped create. With Troy trailing 3-2 in the eighth, he led off with a single. Garrett Pitts put down a sacrifice bunt to get him to second, and then he quickly stole third. Three pitches later, Holcomb scored the tying run on a wild pitch.
Â
Trevin Hall hit a two-run home run in the sixth and David Hall finished 3-for-4 as the Trojans scratched and clawed back into a game they trailed for the majority of the game.
Â
Troy starter Shane McCain looked shaky early allowing base runners to reach third base in each of the first three innings. ULM finally broke through in the third. Dalton Herrington walked to lead off the frame. After McCain recorded a pair of outs, Keelin Rasch hit a soft single down the left field line. Justin Stawychny then singled to left field to plate the game's first run. After a walk, Tidwell singled to center to drive home two more runs.
Â
McCain would settle down to pitch six innings and record his sixth quality start in as many outings this season. Dating back to last season, he has seven consecutive quality starts and 10 in his last 12 starts. The senior southpaw would surrender eight hits and strike out six.
Â
Trevin Hall would pull Troy to within one run in the sixth inning with a two-run blast over the wall in right field. Hall now leads the Trojans with five home runs on the season.
Â
Austin Sullivan (1-1) pitched three scoreless innings in relief to earn the win on the mound.
Â
Troy looks to take the rubber game from ULM as they conclude the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Riddle-Pace Field. The Trojans are 3-1 on Sunday's this season.
