Troy & Southern Miss Ink Home-and-Home Football Series

TROY, Alabama – Troy and Southern Miss have agreed to a home-and-home football series to be played in 2016 and 2019, both schools announced Friday afternoon. The schools have met just once since 1977 when they squared off in the 2008 New Orleans Bowl.

"We wanted to act quickly to fill the void left by UAB on our 2015 and 2016 schedules and this is a series that simply makes sense for a lot of reasons," Troy Athletic Director John Hartwell said. "We already play each other in almost every sport and geographically it is a great fit for both fan bases. With the UAB rivalry done, I hope this is the start of many more football games with Southern Miss."

Troy will travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., on Sept. 17, 2016, for the first game of the series, while the Golden Eagles will make the return trip on Sept. 7, 2019. Troy was scheduled to host UAB in 2015 and travel to Birmingham in 2016.

"I have to give John Hartwell a lot of credit for having a plan in place and locking down this series quickly after the news broke about UAB," Troy head coach Neal Brown said. "This is going to be an exciting series for our players and for our fans. From a recruiting and fan engagement standpoint, it is very beneficial for us to continue to play games within our geographic footprint."

Prior to the 2008 New Orleans Bowl meeting, Troy and Southern Miss played in 1977 and then six times from 1935-1940.

Troy still has to fill the opening on its schedule for next season. The Trojans are set to travel to Mississippi State, North Carolina State and Wisconsin in 2015 and will be looking to add a home game.
