TROY, Alabama – Highlighted by 17 games against NCAA Tournament teams and home contests against Auburn, Georgia Tech and South Alabama, the Troy softball team released its schedule for the 2015 season Thursday.
Â
"I'm extremely excited about this year's schedule," first-year head coach Beth Mullins said. "We have a good pre-conference schedule, including four tournaments, that's going to be challenging and will help us get ready for Sun Belt Conference play."
Â
Troy will face nine different schools that appeared in the NCAA Tournament last season beginning with Auburn in the season opener on February 5. The Trojans open the home portion of their schedule with the first of two tournaments at the Troy Softball Complex. Western Kentucky, North Florida, Buffalo, Alabama State and Florida A&M will take part in the Troy Chick-fil-A Invite over the weekend of February 6-8.
Â
The Trojans will then travel to Athens, Ga., for the Bulldog Invitational the next weekend (Feb. 13-15). Following a mid-week doubleheader at Alabama State (Feb. 17), Troy welcomes Mercer, Northern Illinois, Evansville and UConn to campus for the Troy Firehouse Invite (Feb. 20-22). The final tournament of the spring sends the Trojans to DeLand, Fla., for the Stetson Classic (Feb. 27-March 1).
Â
Home games against Georgia Tech on March 4 and Auburn on March 11 split the Sun Belt Conference opener at Georgia State (March 7-8).
Â
"The Sun Belt is a great conference and every series this year is going to be a battle," Mullins said. "Our goal is going to be to get better every game leading up to Sun Belt Conference play and then to be playing our best softball down the stretch in May."
Â
Troy's Sun Belt home opening series will feature league newcomer Appalachian State on March 14-15. The Trojans then hit the road for six straight games with stops at Florida State (March 18), UL Lafayette (March 21-22) and Kennesaw State (March 24).
Â
In-state rival UAB pays a visit to the Troy Softball Complex on March 31 and ULM comes to town for a Sun Belt series on April 3-4. Another long stretch away from home awaits the Trojans next as they play 10 straight on the road before closing the year out with a six-game homestand.
Â
The road swing begins with a non-conference doubleheader at Southern Miss (April 7) before the Trojans head to Texas State (April 11-12) for a league series. Troy has a mid-week date at Florida A&M (April 14) and a Sun Belt series at Georgia Southern (April 18-19) before wrapping up the stretch at Alabama on April 21.
Â
The Trojans season-ending homestand begins with UT Arlington on April 25-26 before South Alabama makes the trip north on May 2-3 to close out the regular season.
Â
The Sun Belt Conference Tournament, which features the top eight teams in the league, will take place in San Marcos, Texas, on May 6-9.
