TROY, Ala. – Competing for the first time in four years, the Troy cheerleading squad finished in fifth place at the UCA College Cheerleading Nationals in the Division I Small Coed competition last weekend at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla.
"This was a great experience for our team and was a great marketing tool for Troy University," head coach Tiffany Chandler said. "It was a first for all of us as none of our squad had ever set foot on the competition mat at the UCA Nationals and it is my first season as the head coach. This has already provided a boost to our recruiting and we received many compliments on our sportsmanship and for our performances."
The Division I Small Coed Division allows teams to have up to four men and 12 women on the mat for their routine. A total of 20 teams competed in the classification and the Trojans scored a 77.425 in the opening routine to advance to the final round of competition.
Troy improved in the finals with a 78.45 to finish fifth in the field of 20; among the schools that Troy finished ahead of were Penn State, Syracuse, Purdue, ULM, BYU, Colorado State, Rutgers and San Diego State.
Routines were judged based on several different categories including crowd leading, stunts, pyramids, basket tosses and group tumbling.
