TROY, Ala. - Troy quarterbacks threw six touchdown passes and the defense earned six sacks as the Trojans defeated Savannah State 66-3 Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Corey Robinson threw for four scores, including three to Eric Thomas. It was the third four-touchdown performance of Robinson's career. The six touchdown passes by Troy quarterbacks tied a school single-game record set in 1967 and 1968.
Troy's defense looked solid throughout as the unit allowed just 147 total yards and held Savannah State (0-2) to 2-for-12 on third downs.
"This was a game in which we needed to perform well. I thought we prepared well and it felt like it was a little bit of a strain, but we had a pretty clean operation," Troy head coach Larry Blakeney said. "We threw the ball pretty well. We didn't have a turnover and we forced two ourselves. I'm proud of these guys for doing what they were supposed to do."
With the win, the Trojans open the season 2-0 for the first time since 2008.
Robinson continued to be incredibly efficient through the air completing 17 of 19 passes for 190 yards. The senior gunslinger is now 47 of 51 (92.2 percent) on the season.
Troy would rack up 531 yards of total offense but was balanced with 280 yards through the air and 251 on the ground.
Eight different Trojans would get carries as freshman Jordan Chunn led the way with nine carries for 48 yards and a touchdown.
Troy jumped out to a 17-0 advantage in the first quarter courtesy of a pair of Robinson to Thomas touchdown connections and a 37-yard field goal from Will Scott.
A 50-yard strike from Robinson to Thomas on the third play of the second half would open Troy's lead to 31-3. The Trojans would score three more times in the third quarter to pull away. Eli Canton would cap the scoring with a 78-yard interception return with 10:02 left in the final quarter.
"We are going to play fast if we can, but of course a fast three-and-out is not good," Blakeney said. "We like to play fast because we feel like it gives us an advantage over the defense. It is good to be able to see us play fast and get some scores."
Troy's 66 points were the most since beating Charleston Southern 66-7 in 1995 and it was the first time the Trojans scored 60 or more points in a game since thumping Alcorn State 65-0 in 2009.
The Trojans hit the road for the first time this season next week as they open Sun Belt Conference play with a Thursday night matchup with Arkansas State. The game is set for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff and will be broadcast on ESPNU.
