Softball Wraps Up 2014 Signing Class
TROY, Ala. – Soon after the Troy softball season ended, pitcher Jaycee Affeldt returned home to British Columbia and got back on the field to compete at the 2013 Canada Summer Games, helping lead her team to its fourth consecutive gold medal in softball.
Affeldt's squad, Team BC, started off slow in the early rounds of the tournament, but advanced to the medal round as the fourth seed. Affeldt was strong in the circle, finishing the tournament with a 1.79 ERA and 33 strikeouts in five appearances.Â
"We finished fourth in the round robin, so we only had one life left," said Affeldt. "All the teams that finished above us had beaten us in the round robin, so we had to beat all of them to win, and we did. It was 'revenge times three'."
The multi-sport Summer Games takes place every four years and features competitions for both men and women representing their provinces.
The experience gained by Affeldt on the field is sure to carry over as she returns to Troy for her junior season.
"I played a major leadership role on my Team BC team," Affeldt said. "I was a captain and we had two other captains. I think that while I played on Team BC I just tried to keep everyone focused and pumped up for the games. So I think that's something I'll bring back to Troy. Since I'm an upperclassman now I'm going to try and play a bigger leadership role. I feel like I've always been more of a leader than anything, and I'm just going to try to lead by example."
Affeldt began the summer by helping Team BC win the Canadian Open in mid-July, defeating the Quebec Rebelles 11-4 in the championship game. She hit .333 in the Open and drove in seven runs. In the circle, Affeldt finished 2-1 with a 0.91 ERA, two complete games and 27 strikeouts.
The Trojans begin their fall season on Wednesday, October 2, with a 10-inning game against Lurleen B. Wallace Community College at 5 p.m. at the Troy Sportsplex.
