TROY, Ala. - The Troy University softball team has an exciting slate of games scheduled for the 2014 season including home games against in-state rivals Auburn and Alabama. Head coach Melanie Davis announced the schedule on Wednesday.
21 games on Troy's 56-game schedule will come against teams that advanced to NCAA Regionals last season. Five of those teams ended last season nationally ranked.
The Trojans will open the season at home on Feb. 6, against Auburn. The next day, the Troy Subway Invitational begins with a solid field of participants including 2012 national champion Alabama. Northwestern State, Kennesaw State and Memphis will also participate. The tournament will run from Feb. 7-9, with the Crimson Tide and Troy squaring off at 2:30p.m., on the final day. The Crimson Tide finished last season ranked No. 10 nationally.
Troy will play 18 home games including conference matchups against South Alabama (Mar. 26), Georgia State (Mar. 29-30), Louisiana-Lafayette (Apr. 18-19), and Texas State (Apr. 26-27).
The team will hit the tournament circuit throughout the month of February and most of March, beginning with the North Florida Invitational from February 14-16. There, the Trojans will face Southern Illinois, UNF, Savannah State, Quinnipiac and Southern Illinois.
Troy then travels to the Lipton Invitational, hosted by the University of Florida. The Lipton Invitational boasts a tough field, including Florida, Georgia Southern, Indiana and Coastal Carolina.
Next up is a trip to Statesboro, Ga., for the Eagle Classic, hosted by Georgia Southern. There, the Trojans will meet up with former Sun Belt Conference foe Middle Tennessee, as well as Tennessee State and host Georgia Southern.
Troy's next tournament is the UCF Knights Spring Fling in Orlando, Fla. Five new opponents await the Trojans there, in Bowling Green, Penn, UT Martin, Western Carolina and UCF.
The final regular season tournament of the season will take place in Conway, S.C., at the Chanticleer Showdown. Troy will open up against host Coastal Carolina, before facing Fordham and Minnesota.
Single non-conference games include trips to Georgia Tech (Mar. 5), Auburn (Mar. 12), UAB (Apr. 10) and a home game against Florida A&M (Apr. 22).
The Trojans return several stars from a season ago, including three seniors in Kacie McAllister, Taylor Smartt and Ebony Wright. 12 newcomers will also be competing for playing time.
