TROY, Ala. – Five Trojans have been honored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) for their academic success during the 2012-13 year by being named Academic All-America Scholar Athletes.
Jaycee Affeldt, Leah Brundidge, Chelsea Eytel, Taylor Smartt and Sarah Thomas were all acknowledged for their success in the classroom during the last school year.
To be considered for the NFCA Academic All-America team, athletes must maintain a GPA of at least 3.5 over both semesters of the school year.
The five women honored also had solid seasons on the field for the Trojans. Affeldt appeared in 25 contests a year ago, finishing the season with seven wins. Brundidge appeared in 33 games for the Trojans, mostly as a pinch-runner and defensive replacement in the outfield.
Eytel was a quality outfielder for the Trojans last season, finishing second on the team with seven outfield assists. Smartt drove in 14 runs and posted a .956 fielding percentage.
Thomas saw some time in the circle last season, finishing the year with 33 strikeouts.
