TROY, Ala. – On a rainy Halloween night, Troy fought penalties, turnovers and a motivated ULM team in a 49-37 defeat in Sun Belt Conference action at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Corey Robinson was 31-for-52 passing for 362 yards and two touchdowns but the Trojans offense couldn't keep pace with a relentless ULM attack. The game marked the 24th time that Robinson has eclipsed 300 yards passing in his career. He would also tie Sim Byrd for the Troy record for career touchdown passing with 79.
In just second game since returning from injury, ULM quarterback Kolton Browning threw for 354 yards and five touchdowns.
"It was a devastating loss," Troy head coach Larry Blakeney said. "We've been through a lot. I'll take the blame for this one. Poor leadership on my part and I'll try to get that rectified starting tomorrow."
Trailing 42-37, Troy had a chance to take the lead late in the contest but the Warhawks mounted a 6-play, 68-yard drive capped by a 29-yard touchdown pass from Browning to Tre' Perrier to ice the game.
Troy (5-4, 3-2 Sun Belt) was called for 11 penalties for 115 yards compared to just five penalties for 40 yards against ULM. The Trojans also turned the ball over twice.
ULM (5-4, 3-1) took an early 14-0 lead before the Trojans answered when Robinson hit Wilson Van Hooser for a 21-yard score at the 10:00 mark in the second quarter. Van Hooser would finish with 61 yards receiving, a Troy career high.
Van Hooser's score was made possible by a 32-yard punt return by Bryan Holmes to set the Trojans up at the ULM 33.
After the Warhawks tacked on another score, Troy's special teams injected some life when Eli Canton blocked a ULM punt. The ball crossed the line of scrimmage and was scooped up by receiver K.D. Edenfield who carried the ball into the end zone for a touchdown. It was Troy's first blocked punt since Nov. 20, 2007, against Middle Tennessee. It was also the first punt returned for a touchdown by the Trojans since 2010.
Will Scott would add a 43-yard field goal moments later to cut the Trojans deficit to four, 21-17, heading into halftime.
ULM scored twice coming out of halftime to take a 35-17 advantage. The teams would trade scores at the end of the period starting with Holmes hauling in a 55-yard pass from Robinson. The score was set up by a 42-yard run by freshman Jordan Chunn, it was the longest rush of the season for the Trojans. The Warhawks responded with a 1-yard plunge from Browning with 44 second remaining in the third quarter.
Chunn would find the end zone himself with 10:56 left in the game with a 2-yard run. Robinson followed by scoring from thee yards out five minutes later.
"The game was won by the best team, tonight," Blakeney said. "I think that we could've performed a little better and had a chance, but it didn't turn out that way."
The loss drops Troy into third in the Sun Belt Conference standings with a pair of conference games left to play.
The Trojans will travel to play Louisiana-Lafayette on Thursday, Nov. 7. The game, scheduled for a 6:30p.m. kick, will be televised on ESPNU.
