Nine Trojans Earn NFCA Scholar-Athlete All-America Honors

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Nine Troy softball players were named 2012 NFCA All-America Scholar-Athletes, by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association for their dedication in the classroom.
Sophomore pitcher Jaycee Affeldt, senior infielder Bailey Blake, senior catcher Hannah Renn and junior infielder Taylor Smartt all received the honor. Former Trojans Sarah Harris, Nikki Hollett, Kelly Luquette, Melissa Pratt and Sarah Shields all received the award, respectively.
The award is bestowed upon any player who achieved a 3.50 grade point average or higher during the 2011-12 academic year.
In her first season as a Trojan, Affeldt was a two-way player for the Trojans, making 27 appearances and starting 18 games in the circle. In 2012, Affedt finished with a 9-9 record and 3.81 ERA. At the plate, the sophomore posted a .270 batting average with a home run, seven doubles and 20 RBIs.
Blake transferred to Troy from Mesa (Ariz.) Community College and started 37 games at shortstop for the Trojans. In her junior season, Blake stole six bases in eight attempts and turned in several highlight reel defensive plays in the middle of the Troy infield.
A second team All-Sun Belt Conference selection, Renn hit .286 in 47 starts as Troy's catcher during 2012. A transfer from Gulf Coast Community College, Renn was second on the team with seven home runs and posted a .521 slugging percentage, while recording eight doubles, two triples and swiping 12 bags in 13 attempts.
A native of Troy, Smartt appeared in 40 games during her sophomore campaign in 2012, hitting .216 with a tripled and four RBIs. As a freshman, Smartt started every game while splitting time between second base and catcher and was named to the NFCA All-Region team in 2011, after recording nine multi-hit games, 17 RBIs and scoring 23 runs.
The Troy softball team opens the 2013 season at the Bulldog Kickoff Classic hosted by Mississippi State on February 8-10. The Trojans open up the tournament against future Sun Belt Conference foe Georgia State on Friday, Feb. 8 at 10 a.m.
