Full Release
NEW ORLEANS, La. – Just four weeks into her freshman season, Troy softball pitcher Ashley Rainey has been named the Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week for the second time.
Rainey helped lead the Trojans to a 5-0 record last weekend at the Red and Blue Classic hosted by Ole Miss. The perfect weekend marked the second tournament title of the season for the Trojans who are now 16-2 on the season.
Rainey appeared in four games and gave up just three runs over 17.2 innings with two starts. The true freshman picked up three wins on the weekend and two complete games with a 1.19 ERA.
Her most impressive outing came in the Championship Game of the tournament as Rainey threw a four-hit, complete-game shutout against Chattanooga, a team that scored eight runs against Troy a day earlier.
In that game on Saturday, Rainey was the star for Troy as she came on in the fourth inning with Troy trailing 7-0. The Tuscaloosa, Ala., native surrendered just one more run and kept Troy in a game that they came back to win, 9-8 in extra innings.
The weekly honor is the second of the season for Rainey and third of the year for Troy as Hannah Renn was named Player of the Week last week.
On the season, Rainey is now 6-1 with a 2.09 ERA in 12 appearances, including seven starts and four complete games. She has three shutouts to her credit and has walked just 10 in 53.2 innings.
The Trojans now turn their attention to next weekend's Purple and Gold Challenge hosted by LSU in Baton Rouge, La. Troy will LSU twice and Mississippi Valley State twice at the three-day tournament.
