TROY NOTES
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee converted five Troy turnovers into 21 points and got three more points off a blocked punt as the Blue Raiders rallied late to defeat Troy 24-21 Saturday afternoon at Floyd Stadium.
The final turnover of the night proved to be the most costly for the Trojans as Kevin Byard intercepted a tipped Deon Anthony pass and returned it 77 yards for a touchdown with 5:48 to play in the game; the two-point conversion gave the Blue Raiders a 24-21 lead.
The Trojans marched right back down the field on their ensuing possession, but a dropped pass on fourth-and-11 gave the ball back to the Blue Raiders with 2:46 remaining in the game. Middle Tennessee (8-3, 6-1 Sun Belt) converted a third-and-three and then took a knee to close out the game.
Troy (5-7, 3-5) took a 21-16 lead on a 6-yard touchdown run by Anthony with just over nine minutes to play in the game. On the second play of Middle Tennessee's next possession Brynden Trawick intercepted Logan Kilgore and returned it 43 yards to the Blue Raider 47-yard line.
The Trojans moved to the Blue Raider 31-yard line before Byard picked off Troy's third-and-7 pass attempt and returned it for the game-winning score.
Troy held Middle Tennessee to just 328 yards of total offense – 164 of which came on two plays – and just 10 first downs in the game. Logan Kilgore completed 18-of-36 passes for 176 yards and Jordan Parker rushed for 144 yards on 19 carries; 98 yards came on one play.
Shawn Southward rushed for 116 yards on 16 carries to finish the season with 1,012 yards, while Corey Robinson threw for 183 yards to push his season total to 3,121 yards. Couple that with Chip Reeves, who topped the 1,000-yard receiving mark last week, the trio became the first group in Troy history to reach those milestones in the same season.
Middle Tennessee took an early 10-0 lead following a pair of Troy turnovers. An interception gave the Blue Raiders the ball on the Trojan 40-yard line to set up a 37-yard field goal by Carlos Lopez.
On the ensuing possession, the Trojans marched down the field and thought they had a touchdown on a second down run by D.J. Taylor, however he was ruled down on the 1-yard line and the play was not reviewed. Troy fumbled on the next play and Middle Tennessee recovered on the 2-yard line.
On the first play of the Blue Raiders' drive following the fumble, Jordan Parker rushed up the middle 98-yards for a touchdown.
Robinson put the Trojans on the board with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Eric Thomas on the final play of the first quarter.
After the Trojans blocked a Lopez field goal attempt, the Blue Raiders returned the favor as they were credited with a blocked punt as Will Scott's rugby kick hit a player behind the line of scrimmage.
Middle Tennessee took possession at the Troy 16-yard line, but the Trojan defense held and Lopez cashed in on a 26-yard field goal to extend the Blue Raider lead to 13-7.
Troy went 78 yards on 10 plays on its first possession of the second half and took a 14-13 lead on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Anthony to Jarod Lee.
The Trojans were moving the ball again late in the third quarter with a first-and-10 on the Middle Tennessee 33-yard line. However, a botched handoff led to another fumble that Dearco Nolan recovered for the Blue Raiders and returned it 59 yards to the Troy 8-yard line.
Troy's defense held once again and Lopez booted a 21-yard field goal to put Middle Tennessee up 16-14.
