Affeldt in Line for National Team Spot

TROY, Ala. – Troy softball player Jaycee Affeldt was named one of 43 athletes in the final pool that will be used to select the Canadian National Team in June.
The Trojan freshman competed with the Canadian Junior National Team last month at the ISF Junior Women's World Championships in Cape Town, South Africa. Affeldt hit clean up for the Canadians in South Africa and helped them to fifth place finish.
The Maple Ridge, British Columbia, native hit .423 over the tournament with a team-high nine RBI. She also pitched 7.0 innings, all in relief, giving up just two hits with 10 strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. Affeldt pitched against the United States, Chinese Taipei and China in the tournament.
“When Jaycee joined our squad, we were fully aware of the impact she could make, both here at Troy and with the Canadian Junior National Team,” said head coach Melanie Davis. “Her work ethic, combined with the expertise and instruction provided by our battery coach, Sharon O'Mara, have already helped Jaycee continue to elevate her game forward.”
Affeldt's stellar tournament caught the eye of Canada's selection committee and Affeldt is now in line to be invited to the final selection camp for the Senior National Team, which will be held in Oklahoma City, Okla. in mid-June.
The Canadian Senior National Team will first play at the KFC World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City in late June before competing in two other tournaments throughout the summer.
As for now, Affeldt's performance this spring in her freshman season at Troy will determine if she is officially invited to the selection camp. Davis thinks Affeldt won't have any problems doing just that.
“Jaycee's pitching skills, combined with her offensive power, should help her make an immediate impact in the Sun Belt Conference,” Davis said.
