Trawick Has A Long History With Troy

When the Troy coaching staff was looking for help for the secondary last fall, the recruiting trail led, as it often has, to Booneville, Miss.
That small outpost is the home of Northeast Mississippi Community College, which has become a regular contributor of players to the Trojans' roster over the years. But the coaches did not know right away that they had a recruiting edge in landing safety Brynden Trawick.
The junior, they found out later, has a history of sorts with Troy University. His father, George, graduated from Troy State and went on to become the head basketball coach at DeVry University.
In January of 1992 DeVry and Troy met on the court in a game that set, and still holds, the all-time record for points by one team and combined in a game. In all, the Trojans' 258-141 victory set 13 NCAA records.
While Coach Trawick's history did not play out to win against Troy, his son is definitely looking for success as a Trojan. The younger Trawick's odyssey to Troy started in Lansing Michigan, when he started his collegiate career at Michigan State.
After spending two season in East Lansing, one as a redshirt and one where he played in five games, he transferred to Northeast Mississippi where he had a solid sophomore season.
Trawick arrived at Troy in January, drawn by the program's history of turning out solid NFL performers. He made an immediate impression during spring practice.
“Troy has a history of drafting a high number of players into the NFL and many have been very successful,” Trawick said. “I have dreams to one day be that player in the NFL.”
His good work in the spring has carried over to training camp. Trawick is on pace to be the Trojans' starter at strong safety. Much of his efforts have been focused on improving his foot-work. He will serve in a dual role, covering receivers who venture over the middle of the field while also filling the running lanes.
“Brynden is a big, strong-bodied safety who is very physical,” head coach Larry Blakeney said. “He also has great ball skills, which is something we really need at the safety position. We need someone who can play run and also play man-to-man and play the ball in the air.”
Trawick is looking forward to opening the season against Clemson. He sees that game as a test his skills.
“Just because we are a smaller school doesn't mean we can't compete with them,” Trawick said. “I am ready for a big win.”
Since transferring to Troy, Trawick said he is most looking forward to winning his first championship. A Sun Belt Conference title this year would be the Trojans' sixth in a row. Trawick is excited to be a part of the Trojan family and hopes to help lead the team to another title.
“Trawick has all of the capabilities to be leader on this defense,” Troy defensive coordinator Jeremy Rowell said. “He is making his mark here to be a good player for us.”
Trojans To Scrimmage Saturday
After nine days of practice, the Trojans will get a look at the progress they have made on Saturday morning when the team has its first scrimmage of the fall.
The scrimmage is expected to begin at 10:30 a.m. and last about 90 minutes. The coaching staff plans to run at least 100 plays with the first offense against the second defense and the second offense against the first defense. There will also be some head-to-head play for the third team offense against the third team defense.
The Trojans will get Sunday off from practice but will have a team outing late in the day.
The schedule calls for the Trojans to hold a two-a-day practice on Monday before a single practice session on Tuesday. Classes open at Troy University next Wednesday, and football practice will move to its regular season time in the late afternoon.
