The Troy Trojans softball team may have seen its season come to an end back in May, but a couple of Trojans hit the diamond this summer with some elite competition.
Nikki Hollett and Sarah Harris recently returned from Vancouver where they were teammates with the California A's, a team comprised of Division I softball players. Harris, Hollett and the A's took part in the week-long Scotiabank Canadian Open Fastpitch Women's International Championship.
The pair of rising seniors competed in the Canadian Open against national teams from the USA, Japan, Venezuela, Australia (Hollett's home country) and Canada (Harris' home country). The A's also competed in a division with elite club teams.
The A's won the club team division and along the way defeated Venezuela and Australia while dropping a tight 2-1 decision to the Canadian national team.
Throughout the championship Hollett played first base for the A's, hitting .375 in her 10 games while leading the squad in RBI. Harris saw action in three games in the outfield for the A's and posted a .429 batting average.
Harris and Hollett now return to Troy looking to build on the 2010 campaign which saw the Trojans post a 32-27 record. Hollett led the Trojans a year ago with a .354 batting average, 20 home runs and 56 RBI. Her 20 long balls sat as the seventh most in the nation at season's end.
