Sun Belt to Kick-Off Softball Championship with Family Night Celebration
LAFAYETTE, La. (SunBeltSports.org) – The Sun Belt Conference will kick-off the 2011 Sun Belt Conference Softball Championship on Tuesday, May 10 with the Family Night Celebration at Lamson Park on the campus of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
This annual event honors student-athletes for their performance on the field and in the classroom while providing several family-friendly activities throughout the night, including a student-athlete home run derby and fireworks show. Gates open at 6:45 p.m. and the event is free and open to the public.
Festivities include live Cajun music from The Vermillionaires, face-painting, give-aways and an autograph session with the student-athletes. The first 50 kids (ages 12 and under) to arrive will receive a FREE set of Sun Belt Conference autograph cards.
Family Night kicks off with a welcome and the national anthem. An academic awards ceremony will follow for those student-athletes who were named to the Academic Honor Roll and the Commissioner's List, followed by the presentation of the All-Sun Belt Conference Teams and Coach of the Year award.
The home run derby, which begins at 7:45 p.m., will feature a student-athlete from each team participating in the tournament. Student-athletes will be divided into East and West divisions determined by the conference office to participate as a team and not individually. Each batter will engage in two rounds – the first round will consist of 10 outs and the second round will consist of six outs. The division that has the most combined home runs at the end of both rounds will be declared the winner.
Following the home run derby, fans will be treated to a fireworks show.
The Sun Belt Conference Softball Championship is May 11-14 at Lamson Park on the campus of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in Lafayette, La. For additional information on the tournament, visit www.sunbeltsports.org.
