Ashlyn Williams and Nikki Hollett helped lead Trojans to a perfect 4-0 week in conference play
NEW ORLEANS – After leading their team to the first conference series sweep of the season, TROY swept the Sun Belt Conference Softball Player of the Week honors, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
Nikki Hollett was named the Player of the Week, and Ashlyn Williams was named the Pitcher of the Week.
Hollett led the Trojans at the plate this week as she connected on her league-leading 17th and 18th home runs of the year against South Alabama and WKU. The junior finished the week hitting .700 in four games, with four of her seven hits coming of the extra base variety. Hollett connected on a pair of triples and a pair of home runs on the week, but none bigger than her game-winning home run against South Alabama on Wednesday on the road (2-0 victory). Hollett walked four times on the week, including a pair of walks in the week's finale against WKU in which she hit a home run and recorded a triple. The junior scored five runs and drove in another seven, returning to her form of the early season. She also slugged 1.700 and had an on-base percentage of .786 for the weekend.
Williams appeared in four conference games this weekend and figured into a decision in all four of those contests. Williams started three games; recording a 3-0 record, while also recording a save in the other contest of the week for the Trojans. The Sun Belt Conference Preseason Pitcher of the Year recorded a 0.33 ERA, as she allowed just one run to cross the plate in 21 innings pitched – that was a home run in the seventh inning against WKU out of the bullpen. Williams threw three complete games – including a two-hitter against South Alabama on the road Wednesday. She also allowed just nine total hits for the week, striking out 22 and walking just four. Opponents hit just .129 against the senior on the week as she pitched two two-hitters and a four-hitter for her victories.
The Trojans return to action Tuesday night, hosting top-ranked Alabama at the Troy Softball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 6 pm, and admission is free.
