BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A pair of Troy University softball players were selected for the All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the Easton/Hibbett All-Alabama Classic on Sunday afternoon.
Senior Ashlyn Williams (Hattiesburg, Miss./Oak Grove HS) and Nikki Hollett (Melbourne, Australia/Wesley College) earned the honors for their performances against the best the state of Alabama has to offer in Division I college softball.
She opened the season with four home runs in three games; highlights by a two home run effort in a 17-0 victory over Alabama A&M University. Hollett was also responsible for the Trojans hitting back-to-back home runs three times this weekend, as she did it once with Kelly Luquette (St. Amant, La./St. Amant HS) and twice with Hayden Gann (Hoover, Ala./Hoover HS). The junior did more than just hit for power as she collected seven hits in 16 at-bats; finishing the week with a .438 average. The junior had to leave the game against Alabama after being hit twice – once at bat and once in the field – but returned both times to finish the contest against the third-ranked team in the country. In 16 plate appearances this weekend, Hollett struck out just three times and earned one walk (against Alabama on Sunday). Her efforts allowed her to climb from 10th on the all-time home run list at the school, all the way up to fifth as she now has 17 career home runs.
Meanwhile, Williams pitched just two games this weekend at the Easton/Hibbett All-Alabama Classic, but it was good enough to get her on the All-Tournament Team at the end of the weekend. The senior went 1-1 this weekend, losing a heartbreaking one-run game to Auburn and also defeating UAB. The senior struck out 10 in a losing effort against Auburn in the first game on Saturday, allowing just one earned run and four hits. Then, just 30 minutes later, Williams started against UAB and allowed four hits; but she struck out 13 and allowed no one reach base via walk. The shutout of UAB gave Williams yet another school record as she now has 18 career shutouts for the Trojans.
The Trojans return to action this weekend as they host the Quality Inn Classic in which they will host the likes of Bradley, Central Arkansas, North Florida and Samford at the Troy University Softball Complex. The tournament begins Friday and runs through Sunday.
