The squads brought home six trophies and an award for game-planning
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Summer is usually a down time for many in the world of athletics, but for cheerleaders around the country it is a time for competition and learning.
The Troy University Cheerleading squads did just that this summer as they ventured north for the second consecutive year, bringing back some hardware to show off all their hard work.
The squads attended the Universal Cheerleading Association (UCA) camp in Tuscaloosa, on the campus of the University of Alabama. Every year hundreds of college teams unite to participate in a college cheerleading camp, with the squads learning new material and getting instruction on stunts, pyramids, baskets, and crowd appeal during this time.
The Troy cheerleaders headed north on Friday July 23 where they started a half a day instruction. The final day of cheer camp consisted of college teams competing against each other in different categories. One category consisted of a chant that was taught at camp, while another category consisted of a cheer that was taught at camp. The last category consisted of the fight song that each team brought from their own school.
"Overall my girls and guys grew over the three day camp,” cheerleading coach Amber Spradley said. “They grew in talent and knowledge. I am very proud of how we competed. We are ready to represent Troy and cheer on those Trojans!"
The Troy University Cheerleaders walked away with six trophies at the end of the week, showing off all their hard work. The All-Girl squad came home with a third place trophy in chant, a fourth place trophy in cheer and a fifth place trophy in fight song.
The Co-ed squad came home with a fourth place trophy in chant and a fifth place trophy in cheer; while T-Roy, the mascot, came home with a fifth place trophy as best collegiate mascot.
Overall the Troy University Cheerleaders came home with a game-planning plaque that was awarded to a few of the schools that had great game planning strategies for their football team and basketball teams. This award consisted of touchdowns, timeouts, free throw shots and first downs.
The Trojans cheer squads now being preparations for the upcoming seasons which begin with a home football game against Bowling Green on September 4.
