TROY, Ala. - Fatigue. Exhaustion. No legs. All terms that can best describe the play of the 65th-ranked Troy University men's tennis team late Saturday night.
After a nearly four hour semifinal battle against Florida Atlantic Saturday afternoon, the Trojans turned around less than two hours later and faced the top team in the Sun Belt in the University of Denver.
The 29th-ranked Pioneers ended Troy's 11-match winning streak 4-0 under the lights at the Lunsford Tennis Center in the championship match of the Sun Belt Shootout.
"Our legs went against Denver," Troy head coach Eric Hayes said. "And it shows we are not near enough in good shape. We have three weeks to correct that."
Denver took advantage quickly of their lay-off, after being off their legs for nearly 3 1/2 hours following their semifinal win against the University of South Alabama. The Pioneers' Andrew Landwerlen claimed the first match of the night, defeating Troy senior Guilherme Sahadi at number six 6-2, 6-0; giving the Pioneers a 1-0 lead overall in the match.
The lead was extended to 2-0 when Enej Bonin defeated Troy's Branko Weber in straight sets 6-0, 6-3; and Denver was standing at match point when Jens Vorkefeld defeated Troy's Mario Rolemberg 6-4, 6-3 at number five.
Unfortunately for the Trojans, the match was decided at number four when Denver's Fabio Biasion defeated Xavier Masson 6-4, 6-2; just beating Troy's Luis Henrique Grangeiro to the point. The Troy freshman had a match point at number one as he led Denver's Yannick Weihs 6-4, 5-4 in the second set. The only other match on the court for the Trojans was at number two where Aurelien Tave trailed 6-4, 2-0 in the second set.
The Trojans saw their longest winning streak in eight years end with the defeat, but it gives the team something to work toward in 20 days at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament - held in New Orleans.
