NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Troy University men's tennis team barely broke a sweat in their opening match of the 2010 Sun Belt Conference Championship Tournament, cruising past Western Kentucky 4-0 at the UNO Tennis Center.
The Trojans, seeded second in the Sun Belt Tournament and ranked #61 nationally, will face Florida Atlantic tomorrow at 3 p.m. The Owls defeated host UNO to advance.
"We just came out and did what we were supposed to do," Trojans coach Eric Hayes said. "The doubles was solid at two and three. Then, in singles the guys came out and took care of business."
With the victory, the Trojans improved to 18-4 on the year. Western Kentucky closes the campaign with an 11-9 mark.
In doubles, the Trojans #3 pairing of Guilherme Sahadi and Anas Rouchdi got Troy off a a fast start with an 8-3 victory in their match with Currie Martin and Quinn Saine. Troy closed out the double point shortly after when the #2 team of Xavier Masson and Branko Weber defeated Arul Selvan and Lance Freeman by an identical 8-3 score.
Troy's #1 doubles team of Henrique Grangeiro and Mario Rolemberg was trailing the Hilltoppers tandem of Craig Kirchgessner and Thomas Krug 7-4 when the doubles point was decided.
The Trojans got off to a fast start in singles play when Sahadi dispatched WKU's Robert Whitmer at #6 in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-1.
Aurelien Tave, playing #2 singles for the Trojans, followed up quickly with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Martin to bring the Trojans within one point of the match.
The race to earn the deciding point was won by Rolemberg at the #5 position when he defeated Freeman 6-1, 6-1. Masson was one game from closing out his match with Kirchgessner (6-1, 5-1) at #4 when the overall match ended.
In the other two matches, Weber had taken the first set from Selvan 6-5 at #3 and Grangeiro and Krug were tied at 5-5 in the first set at #1.
“I thought Aurelien Tave played really well today,” Hayes said. “He was very routine. Also Xavier Masson played well. The whole bottom of our lineup played really well. Now we have to get some rest and get ready for a tough battle tomorrow against either FAU or New Orleans.”
In addition to the men's second round match tomorrow, the Troy women's team will make it's tournament debut on Friday at 11:30 a.m. against the winner of today's match between South Alabama and ULM.
