BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Troy Trojans saw their chances to take a Sun Belt series from Florida Atlantic get washed away on a rainy afternoon in south Florida on Sunday.
The rubber match between the Trojans and Owls was scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. local time, but when it became clear that rain was coming, the start time was moved up to 12:15 p.m. However, that time wasn't early enough as the rain came at about 12:10 p.m. and continued until 1:15 p.m.
The game would finally start at 1:45 p.m. ET, but after one inning was played, lightning was spotted in the area starting an NCAA mandated 30 minute delay at 2:00 p.m.
After the 30 minute delay for lightning was up, the rain began falling again and the field was tarped for the second time. The tarp was removed at 3:15 p.m. and play resumed at 3:25 p.m.
After two pitches another lightning strike cancelled the game officially.
The Trojans (20-20, 8-7) fell to the Owls 6-5 in nine innings in game one on Saturday, but fought back and evened the series with a 4-1 victory in game two.
Ashlyn Williams stuck out 24 Owls (21-19,6-5) in the two games combined while Nikki Hollett led the Trojans at the plate going a combined 5-for-8 with 3 RBI and a solo home run.
The Trojans will be back in action next weekend when they host North Texas at the friendly confines of the Trojan Softball Complex. Troy will be at home for the first time since March 24. The Trojans and Mean Green will play a single game at 5:00 p.m. on Friday and a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
