MONROE, La. - The Troy Trojans softball team will look to bounce back from a tough loss on Wednesday as they travel to ULM for a three games series this weekend.
In that game on Wednesday, Ashlyn Williams struck out 14 batters, adding to the second highest total in the country. The junior Hattiesburg, Miss. native also had a no-hitter going into the seventh inning.
Unfortunately for the Trojans (17-14, 5-2), two singles and a passed ball in the seventh inning was enough for South Alabama to plate one run and take the game, 1-0, at the Trojans' first ever "Strike Out Cancer" game.
The Trojans' leader all year has been Williams who comes in with a 2.34 ERA, 18 complete games, three shutouts, 233 strikeouts and an opponent batting average of .185.
The Trojans offense is led by senior leadoff hitter Kala Moore, whose .370 batting average leads the team. Moore also leads the Sun Belt in stolen bases with 17.
The Trojans main power threat is Courtney Cherry who has started every game as a true freshman and leads the team with four home runs and 22 RBI, she has also drawn a team leading 12 walks and is first on the club with five hit by pitches.
The Warhawks (11-11, 1-2) enter this weekend's series having won eight of their last 12 and three in a row. ULM swept two games from Murray State earlier this week by scores of 5-2 and 13-5. The Warhawks opened Sun Belt play two weeks ago, losing two out of three at home against North Texas
The Warhawks are led by Preseason Sun Belt Player of the Year Brianna Love. The junior outfielder is hitting exactly .400 with a .646 slugging percentage and a .518 on base percentage. As a team the Warhawks enter the weekend hitting .274 and with a 3.58 ERA.
The Trojans and Warhawks are set for a doubleheader beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and a single game at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. Live stats for all games can be found at the link above.
