Trojans Drop Two at Hawaii

HONOLULU, Hawaii - The Troy Trojans lost two games to the home standing Hawaii Rainbow Wahine, on Wednesday night. A sluggish start which led to a 12-run first inning for Hawaii (14-7) in game one and a total of ten runners left on base in game two were enough to put the Trojans (14-7) on the losing end, 19-3 in five innings and 2-1 in eight innings.
GAME ONE
Troy had a tough outing in game one as they fell to Hawaii, 19-3. Sally Ward got the start for the Trojans and gave up eight runs in a third of an inning. Sarah Shields led the Trojans at the plate, going 2-for-2 after coming on as a pinch hitter.
The Trojans got on the board thanks to a sluggish start by Rainbow Wahine. Kala Moore led off the game by reaching on an error. She stole second base to get into scoring position with no outs. A passed ball followed by a wild pitch allowed her to score the games first run.
Unfortunately, the Trojans started a little sluggish as well, allowing Hawaii to plate 12 runs in the bottom of the first. The Rainbow Wahine sent 16 batters to the plate and posted six hits while the Trojans committed three errors. The Trojans also fell victim to two wild pitches, two illegal pitches and two passed balls in the inning.
Troy would a single run in the third inning off of a solo home run by Courtney Cherry.
However, Hawaii plated two more runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, running the score to 14-2.
Hawaii added five more in the fourth and the Trojans put a single run on the board in the fifth, but it was not enough to extend the game as the Trojans fell to Hawaii, 19-3.
GAME TWO
The Trojans also fell in the second game, this time in extra innings by a score of 2-1. Ashlyn Williams went the distance, but was tagged with the loss. She struck out 12 batters and gave up just four hits on the day.
Hayden Gann led the Trojans at the plate, going 2-for-4. Nikki Hollett drove in the Trojans only run.
The Rainbow Wahine got on the board first with a solo home run in the second inning.
The Trojans threatened in the second and fourth innings, getting two hits in each, but they failed to score. Troy left two on in the second inning and left the bases loaded in the fourth.
Troy was able to finally scratch across a run in the fifth. Kaitlin Kenney hit a ball towards the third baseman who made a low throw to first. The throw got past the first baseman as well everyone that was covering behind the bag, allowing Kenney to advance all the way to third.
Nikki Hollett was next up and she delivered with an RBI single to left field to tie the score up 1-1.
Troy threatened again in the top of the seventh. Sarah Shields led off with a single through the right side. Kala Moore followed Shields with an infield hit on a sacrifice attempt. With runners on first and second with no one out, Kaitlin Kenney put down a sacrifice bunt to move them to second and third. Unfortunately that is where they would stay as the Trojans stranded their eighth and ninth runners of the game.
Hawaii also threatened in the seventh, but left the bases loaded, sending the game to extra innings.
With the international tiebreaker in affect, each team placed a runner at second base to start their extra frame.
Troy was able to bunt their runner over to third in the eighth inning, however she was thrown out at the plate on a ground ball to the shortstop.
After Hawaii popped up a bunt attempt for the first out of the inning, Williams struck out a Rainbow Wahine, however the batter reached on a passed ball that also allowed the runner at second to move to third.
After an intentional walk, Hawaii delivered with a sacrifice fly that gave the Rainbow Wahine a 2-1 win in eight innings.
The Trojans will be back in action on Friday when they take part in the Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament hosted by Hawaii at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The Trojans will first take on DePaul at 5:00 p.m. CT.
