TROY, Ala. - The Troy University softball team will have to wait one more day than planned for their season to get under way.
Due to expected winter weather in Troy on Friday, the season opener between the Troy Trojans and the Evansville Purple Aces has been cancelled.
The doubleheader scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. has been moved to 1 p.m. with a tentative start time of 3 p.m. for the second game.
The Trojans and Purple Aces will be meeting for just the third and fourth times in the two programs' histories. The last meeting came in 1999 with Evansville winning, 2-0. Troy took the other meeting in 1996 by a score of 4-3.
The Trojans enter 2010 after posting 38-19 overall record in 2009 and a 15-8 mark in Sun Belt play. The Trojans finished the 2009 regular season in second place in the Sun Belt standings.
Returning for the Trojans are two NFCA All-Region players in pitcher Ashlyn Williams and shortstop Kala Moore.
Troy is having to replace Heidi Johnson who became the first ever Trojan to go pro when she signed with the Akron Racers of the National Pro Fastpitch League last summer.
The Trojans enter 2010 with eight newcomers that will have to step in early, a few as starters.
Evansville enters this season having been picked by the Missouri Valley coaches to finish last in the conference in 2010.
They will enter 2010 with a new head coach in Mark Redburn after the retirement of Gwen Lewis who spent 18 seasons at the helm of the Purple Aces.
The Purple Aces posted a 14-34 mark in 2009 with a 4-19 record in the Missouri Valley. They return a 2009 All-Missouri Valley performer in junior outfielder Jen Stahlhut.
