Troy Falls To Nationally-Ranked Tigers

AUBURN, Ala. - The Troy University men's tennis team fell to their second consecutive nationally-ranked opponent, losing to 28th-ranked Auburn 5-2 in non-conference tennis action Wednesday afternoon.
Troy (3-2), who started the season off with three consecutive victories before the last two matches, won their two matches in singles play at number four and five inside the City of Auburn/Yarbrough Tennis Center.
Auburn jumped ahead early in doubles play, as the Tiger picked up the point with the clinching victory at number one when the team of Tim Hewitt and Alexander Sajonz defeated the Trojan team of Luis Henrique Grangeiro and Mario Rolemberg 8-6. That point was possible with the victory by Tim Puetz and Michel Monteiro over Troy's Xavier Masson and Branko Weber, 9-7.
Although the point was in hand, Auburn swept the doubles point with a 9-8 (7-3) victory by Lucas Lopasso and Andreas Miles over Troy's Anas Rouchdi and Guilherme Sahadi.
In singles play, Auburn won the first three matches of the day to clinch the match for the Tigers. At number one, Puetz defeated Grangeiro 6-1, 6-2; while the Tigers took a 3-0 lead with a victory by Mies at number three over Troy's Masson 6-2, 6-3.
The match was clinched when Hewitt defeated Weber 6-3, 6-3; and Auburn won their fifth and final point of the day with a 6-4, 6-4 victory by Lopasson over Sahadi at number six.
The Trojans picked up victories at number five, when Rolemberg defeated Auburn's Oliver Strecker 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (7-3); and at number four when Aurelien Tave defeated Auburn's Sajonz 6-3, 7-5.
Troy returns to action this weekend at the Lunsford Tennis Complex.
