TROY, Ala. – The Troy University softball team closed out the fall this past weekend, picking up a victory over national power Chipola College, 4-0 at the Troy Softball Complex.
The Trojans used the arm of Ashlyn Williams for the victory as struck out 16 Chipola hitters, recording at least two every inning; with the exception of one. She also struck out the side four times and yielded only two hits on the night.
Although Williams struck out 16 on the night, the highlight came on the defensive side of the field for the Trojans. Freshman Taylor Smartt made the play of the night in the field as she fielded a ball up the middle and was able to throw out the speedy slap hitter from Chipola.
Junior Melissa Pratt also came up big for the Trojans, catching the first five innings and throwing out two runners attempting to steal – one in the second inning and one in the third inning.
At the plate, junior Michelle Hewett had a spectacular night against her former team, a team in which she earned Second Team NFCA All-American last year. The junior went 3-for-3 at the plate, with a walk.
Nikki Hollett became the second Trojan to homer twice in the same game, as she hit a two-run homerun in the fifth inning and solo shot in the seventh to provide all the runs the Trojans would need.
Pratt also had a great night hitting, to go along with her catching, as she went 2-for-3 with a double.
Meanwhile, senior Ashley Adkins, pinch running for Pratt, picked up a couple stolen bases and scored after replacing Pratt on each of her hits.
Freshman Kacie McAllister added a double in the bottom of the second, and after Hollett's solo shot in the seventh, Jordan McAllister and Katie Ely both added pinch hit singles.
The Trojans dropped their final fall game of the season to Darton, despite Randi Ashworth connecting on her third homerun of the fall.
Troy opens the season in a doubleheader at the All-Alabama Classic in Birmingham on February 11. The Trojans will face Alabama State University at 3 pm, followed by NCAA Regional participant Jacksonville State University at 6 pm on that Friday at Liberty Park in Birmingham.
