Trojans Pick Up Another Fall Victory

TROY, Ala. – The Troy University softball team remained unbeaten this fall with an 8-3 victory over Alabama Southern Friday night, running their streak to six games behind the pitching of Haley Hutchins.

The junior went four innings, picking up the victory, allowing two runs to score off of two hits. She also struck out five and did not allow a walk in the contest. Hutchins did not give up her first hit of the game until the fourth inning, the inning in which Alabama Southern scored both of the runs of the junior.

Morgan Grove came on to pitch the final three innings, picking up the save, while allowing one run off of two hits and striking out four.

At the plate, the Trojans put the game away early with five runs through the first three innings. The scoring started in the second inning when Sarah Harris led off with a double. She advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Randi Ashworth groundout for the first run of the contest.

However, the Trojans weren't done with the inning as Kortney Cooper singled with two outs, and scored after Kacie McAllister doubled down the right field line and the throw got away from the third baseman. McAllister would score on an RBI single by Michelle Hewett to close the scoring in the inning.

The Trojans added a pair of insurance runs in the third inning when Taylor Smartt and Nikki Hollett both reached on back-to-back singles to start the inning. They would both score on a Harris double to close the scoring in the inning.

After going two innings without a run, Troy scored a trio of runs in the sixth inning to finish off the victory.

Troy closes out the fall season on Wednesday afternoon at 5 pm against Darton. Admission is free to all fall softball games.
