TROY, Ala. ? Troy University Director of Athletics Steve Dennis announced today the signing of a football scheduling contract with the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., that pit the Trojans and Midshipmen in a home-and-home series during the 2011 and 2012 seasons.
“I am excited about the opportunity to add the Naval Academy to our schedule for the 2011 and 2012 seasons,” Dennis said. “Navy has had the top service academy football program for several years, their team plays in bowl games on an annual basis, and the games should be something for our fans to get excited about.”
The Trojans will travel to Annapolis to play on November 12, 2011, with the Midshipmen to return to visit and play at Movie Gallery Veterans Stadium on November 10, 2012. Both games will be played in conjunction with the Veterans Day holiday and the 2012 game will be played on the 237th anniversary of the creation of the United States Marine Corps by the Continental Congress.
“It is a feather in our cap to get a home and home series with the premier military academy team in the nation,” Trojans head coach Larry Blakeney said. We will be able to make a trip that our fans, including our Chancellor, Dr. Jack Hawkins, who is a veteran himself, will get excited about.
“I am not sure that our defensive coordinator will be very excited about playing Navy because their offensive style presents a lot of problems and it is not something that you have to prepare to face very often.”
Navy has currently strung together six-consecutive winning seasons as the Midshipmen have compiled a 51-25 record since 2003 with six-straight bowl appearances. With wins over both Air Force and Army in 2008, Navy earned its sixth consecutive Commander-In-Chief's Trophy, tying the record for consecutive trophies won set by Air Force from 1998-02.
In addition to the six straight bowl appearances, Navy has already signed deals that will place the Midshipmen in four of the next five seasons, if the team becomes bowl eligible. The Midshipmen will play in bowl games in Houston (2009), San Diego (2010), Washington (2011) and Fort Worth (2013).
“I have friends on the coaching staff at Navy and they have done a great job of putting a solid team on the field year-after-year,” Blakeney said. “It will be good for our program to face them and we are all looking forward to it.”
In addition to having a full non-conference schedule for the 2010 season with South Carolina, Oklahoma State, UAB and Bowling Green, Troy now has three non-conference games set for the 2011 season, and two in 2012.
The 2011 season will open with a road game at Clemson and includes a trip to Arkansas. In 2012 the Trojans will travel to face Tennessee the week before hosting Navy.
The 2009 Trojans will open their quest for a fourth consecutive Sun Belt Conference title on Thursday night, Sept. 3, at Bowling Green. Troy will travel to face defending national champion Florida on Sept. 12 before playing the home-opener on Sept. 19 against UAB.
