TROY, Ala. ? The Troy University women's tennis team dropped a couple of close matches late in their match on Tuesday against South Alabama and fell to the Jaguars 5-2.
The Trojans (10-6) and the Jaguars both came into the match on long winning streaks, but unfortunately only the Lady Jags left the Lunsford Tennis Complex with their streak intact. The Trojans had won seven straight. The win gave the Lady Jags (11-3) their eighth consecutive.
The Trojans fell into an early hole by losing the doubles point.
The duo of Annabelle Bares and Gabriella Viega fell at number three doubles to South Alabama's Alina Volman and Parija Maloo, 8-2, to start the match. However, the Trojans would win the next doubles match when Stephanie Vieira and Mirte De Bakker defeated Erica Krisan and Katie Welch at number two, 8-6.
Just moments later, at number one, Troy's Rawia Elsisi and Leonie Guijt fell to Sylvanie Spangenberg and Michaela Babicova, 8-5.
As the match moved to singles play, the Trojans and Jaguars quickly split the first four singles matches. First, Vieira extended her singles winning streak to seven by defeating Spangenberg at number five in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1.
Troy then fell at number two when De Bakker lost to Babicova, 6-0, 6-1. The Trojans also lost at number six when Volman defeated Troy's Caroline Joaunin, 6-1, 6-4.
With the Trojans in a 3-1, needing all three remaining matches to go their way, that is exactly what nearly happened. Bares got things started for Troy when she won at number four over Maloo, 6-2, 6-4.
With the score now at 3-2, attention turned to number one singles where the Trojans Elsisi had already dropped one set and was in a 5-0 hole in set two to South Alabama's Krisan. However, the senior battle back and tied the set at 5-5. Unfortunately, Elsisi couldn't hold on and lost the next games and the match, 6-2, 7-5.
The match finished with the only three set match of the day as Troy's Guijt fell to Welch, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6.
The Trojans will look to start a new winning streak on Thursday when they will play host to the University of New Orleans at 2:30 p.m. at the Lunsford Tennis Complex. Admission to all home matches is free.
