Trojans Head To Tuscaloosa In Search of Sweep
4/7/2009 5:00:00 AM | Baseball
The Troy Trojans will look to do something tonight that no Troy baseball team has done in 30 years ? sweep a season series from Alabama.
The Trojans (18-12) and Crimson Tide (20-10) will square off a Sewell-Thomas Stadium in Tuscaloosa tonight, with the first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. The game will be available on WTBF-FM 94.7 with Barry McKnight and Ricky Hazel calling the action.
Troy won the first meeting in early March 6-2, and could sweep the two-game season series for the first time since 1979. The Trojans enter play tonight having swept a three-game series at Arkansas State over the weekend and with another road game, at Samford, set for Wednesday.
Alabama also comes into the game off a weekend league sweep, having put the broom to Tennessee. The Crimson Tide leads all of college baseball this year with 62 home runs, averaging more than two per game. Senior outfielder Kent Matthes, who's two-run homer in the first game accounted for both Alabama runs, also leads the nation, having hit 17 long balls.
The Trojans will send junior right-hander Tim Wheeler (2-2, 6.75) to the mound to square off with Alabama junior left-hander David Head (0-3, 11.00). Wheeler struggled in his last outing against Southern Miss, giving up four runs, all unearned, in 2/3 of an inning.
Wheeler has faced Alabama twice in his career at Troy and has not allowed a run in 2.2 innings of relief work with three strikeouts.
Offensively, the hottest bat of late for Troy has been Trevor Tyre's, In his last six games he has hit three home runs and has five doubles. Tyre enters play tonight two hits shy of 100 for his career at Troy.
The only Trojan on record-watch tonight is senior closer Josh Storm. He earned his 17th career save on Sunday at Arkansas State and is now tied with former Troy closer Josh Dew on the career saves list.
Tuesday night is “Dollar Day” and “Family Night” at the Sewell-Thomas Stadium. All general admission tickets are one dollar and families can purchase four tickets, four hot dogs, four bags of chips and four drinks for $20.
