Troy Women Post Best Ever SBC Finish

HOUSTON, Texas ? The Troy University women's golf team posted its best ever finish in Sun Belt play, posting a final round score of 12-over par 300 to finish sixth at the conference championship tournament at Cypresswood Golf Club.
The Trojans (914) dropped one spot in the standings despite turning in their best round of the event. FIU posted a score of 292 on Wednesday to move past Troy and into a tie with FAU for fourth place.
Denver (859) dominated the field from start to finish, posting a six-under par score of 282 in Wednesday's final round to finish at five-under par for the tournament, 14 strokes ahead of second place UALR (873). Middle Tennessee finished third (907) followed by FIU and FAU, both at 909.
Freshman Nikki Crowley (Phenix City, Ala.) was the top individual performer for the Trojans after posting a final round score of two-under par 70. Crowley finished tied for 15th overall with a three-day score of 11-over par 227.
Sophomore Liz Balkcom (Juliette, Ga.) shot a final round score of 76 to slip into a tie for 23rd in the tournament with a final score of 14-over par 230.
Freshman Haley Lawrence (Prattville, Ala.) and junior Desirae Zine (Vaccaville, Calif.) finished tied for 27th overall with a score of 16-over par 232. Junior Kaley Branton (Cartersville, Ga.) shot a final round score of 78 to slip into a tie for 32nd place with a final score of 17-over par 233.
The top individual player in the tournament was Mallory Fraiche of UALR, who defeated teammate Sara Wikstrom by one shot for medalist honors with a final score of three-under par 213. Wikstrom came on strong in the final round with a five-under par round of 67 to finish second.
The next four players in the individual standings were all from the University of Denver.
In the men's tournament, the Trojans dropped into 10th place with a final round score of 300. Troy finished 35 shots back of tournament winner Middle Tennessee, which shot a four-under par score of 284 on Wednesday to hold off Denver for the title.
Senior Jay Harris (Killen, Ala.) was the top individual performer for Troy, finishing tied for 33rd. Harris shot three consecutive rounds of three-over par 75 to finish his career with a nine-over par total of 225.
Fellow senior Wes Parker (Enterprise, Ala.) finished one-shot behind his teammate in a tie for 37th after a final round score of 74.
The other three Troy players ? sophomore Reid Merritt (Slocomb, Ala.), freshman Rourke Van Der Spuy (Bluff, KwaZuluNatal, South Africa) and junior Chase Whitehead (Eufaula, Ala.) ? all finished in order in the final standings.
Merritt struggled to a final round score of 79 to slip to 13-over par 229 for the tournament to finish tied for 44th. Van Der Spuy and Whitehead were both one shot back in a tie for 47th with matching 14-over par scores of 230. Van Der Spuy shot an even-par round 72 on Wednesday while Whitehead posted a score of 81.
Top individual honors in the tournament went to Espen Kofstad of Denver. He closed with a four-under par score of 68 on Wednesday to finish at eight-under for the tournament, five shots ahead of Lloyd du Perez of Arkansas State, who was three-under for the week.
